SOIL Boulder helped me jump start my farm with a zero percent interest loan. When I started my farm, as a first generation farmer, I needed capital to buy cattle. During the first year it was difficult to find money as my business didn't have a proven track record. SOIL Boulder provided that capital with terms that really allowed my business to thrive and not be burdened to pay the loan back immediately. Not only that, but the community and mission around SOIL Boulder is actively working to build resiliency for the long run.

SOIL Boulder has helped us expand as well as improve efficiency on our farm with two zero interest loans. But SOIL is much more than a group that provides loans. SOIL Boulder is composed of leaders in our food system and influential members of our community as well as people who are just beginning to learn about agriculture. Soil Boulder has helped our farm expand production with a high tunnel. A second loan helped us manage our weed pressure with a tractor mounted cultivator. These loans improved our productive capacity and we are so grateful to be able to work with SOIL Boulder.

We are grateful and honored for receiving a loan from SOIL Boulder in the spring of 2023. This collaboration has been essential in helping us expand our operation to provide greater outreach to farmers and communities while supporting the local food economy. FED recently moved their home base for procurement and processing to a newly renovated commercial kitchen facility in Loveland, CO that includes access to three loading docks, several refrigeration/freezer units and extensive warehouse space. Expanding into this facility allows FED to have a centralized location for larger scale surplus produce drop-off from more local farmers, plus additional storage, manufacturing and production space for processing and distribution.

At the beginning of 2020, not long after the pandemic began, the fragility of America’s food chain became alarmingly obvious as farmers across the country and right here in Colorado struggled with impossible decisions and at best, just to find processing facilities that would take their livestock/animals amid covid outbreaks, forced shutdowns and other unexpected adversities. Covid forced me to pivot professionally as well but I knew I possessed the skills to help and that my mobile meat processing business idea could be a way forward for small farmers but I just didn’t have the capital necessary for such an operation. The good folks as SOIL Boulder took the time to meet with me and hear about my ideas & vision, they asked thoughtful questions and now almost four years later Greener Pasture continues to serve the beautiful farms of Northern Colorado and the Front Range and I continue to be grateful that the community at SOIL Boulder took a chance on me when they extended me that zero interest loan. Their belief in me and encouragement and enthusiasm for my business has made all the difference.
